Caravan dealer's A-licence bid fails

IN A written decision, Mr. D. I. R. Muir, Metropolitan LA, has refused an application by Sidebrook Transport Ltd., a second-hand caravan dealer, for three vehicles under A licence (COMMERCIAL MOTOR, January 20). The applicant sought to move caravans between London/St. Albans and five named British ports.

The LA felt that the applicant was seeking to enter the field of haulage by setting up a transport subsidiary to carry mainly for himself and had asked for an A licence, not the more usual B licence. Lion by Byrne Bros., for a new express service between Cellarhead and Ramsgate. picking up at Hanley and Newcastle. to be operated in conjunction with Berresfords' existing service from Leek.

This was opposed by the joint operators and Scout Motor Services Ltd., W. C. Standerwick Ltd.. Yelloway Motor Services Ltd.. George Ewer and Co. Ltd., and Potteries Motor Traction Co. Ltd.

Presenting the joint operators' case, Mr. F. D. Walker said the primary licence had been granted by the North-Western Commissioners in March last year and the service had operated for a period last summer. It picked up no passengers in the West Midland, East Midland or Metropolitan areas.

He pointed out that it was not his clients' intention to ask for a new service, but to carry traffic already using the applicants' connexional facilities via Victoria coach station.

The Commissioners adjourned both hearings.

TWO-VEHICLE SUSPENSION
