And that's why it retains a relevance now, because few machines inspire that emotional connection, unless they're over E150K and that's just not going to happen... is it?
It may tack any hint of assistance when driven, and a few hundred miles on the road may push you over the edge due to a compete blunting of the senses, but to make it unscathed, and in twice the normal time, is a badge of honour well worth wearing. On the flip side, it makes us realise how much we take vehicle technology for granted. Even a current base-level Transporter seems like a Rolls-Royce in comparison.
We're stilt not happy about the now superseded engine, which slightly tarnishes what is arguably the best medium van on the road.
But that aside, remember the next time you jump into your van on a cold wintery day and turn the key for it to start first time, it's come a tong way.
