1949 Prototype of the Transporter unveiled in Wolfsburg. Germany.
1950 Production of the first VW commercial vehicle, the T1 Transporter (split-screen) starts on 8 March in Wolfsburg.lt is followed by the Kombi in May and the Microbus in June of the same year. The Ti had a flat-four 1,131cc engine from the Beetle producing 25hp.
1951 The converter Westfalia develops a 'Camper-Box to fit behind front seats that could be removed for use as a commercial vehicle during the week.
1954 The 100,000th Transporter produced.
1956 A new Volkswagen commercial vehicle factory in Hannover is opened. The 200,000th Transporter is produced.
1958 The first official Volkswagen camper, by Westfalia, is introduced (for the 1959 model year).
1962 The one millionth Volkswagen
Transporter is produced.
1967 After 17 years and production of around 1.8 million, the original Ti Transporter is superseded by the launch of the second-generation T2 with a panorama windscreen (known as The Bay).
1975 The new, larger LT model is launched.
1979 The new, third-generation T3 Transporter Es launched. Nearly 1.3 million were produced.
1980 The first diesel engine (1.6-litre with 46hp) is introduced.
1982 The air-cooled engines era draws to a close with the introduction of a 1.9-litre water-cooled engine (with 60 or 78hp) for 1983 models.
1990 The Transporters 40th anniversary and launch of T4 the first Transporter with front-wheel drive, engine at the front and a completely flat load area.
1997 The eight millionth Transporter is produced.
2003 The fifth-generation T5 is launched.
2007 Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles celebrates 60 years of Volkswagen vans and the production of more than 10 million Transporters with a special customer event in Hannover.
