• Peter Hobbs and John Mills, the truck drivers sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in a Bulgarian jail for smuggling heroin, have lost their second appeal against conviction. The Londoners' first appeal against the result of a retrial ordered by the Bulgarian Supreme Court was rejected in April this year (CM 9-15 April). The two men have been in prison since June 1995 when 20.5kg of heroin was found stashed inside an unlocked trailer locker.

Danneke Neale of the Driver's Family Help Line says the two may now decide to concentrate on trying to secure a transfer to a prison in the UK.
