The Transmanche Passport Project offers a week's driver training in France on work experience with a twinned French company. It also includes a week of language training.

Thirty Kent hauliers have joined an equal number of French hauliers from the Nord Pas de Calais area.

Training company Tronsed is co-ordinating the project, which is funded by the European Social Fund and Kent TEC. More than 60 training places will be available for each of the next two years.

Geoff Dunne, project manager with Hythe Haulage, says the scheme is a rarity because "there's something on offer for nothing here". if the ESF decides the scheme is a success it could be extended to other parts of the country.
