Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

STRATHCLYDE PTE has been refused a licence for a weekend service into surrounding operators' territory.

The Scottish Traffic Commissioners said the impact on existing services of a special service to the Barras Market, Glasgow, at weekends would be against the public interest. This follows objections from Western Scottish, McGill's Bus Service and Graham's Bus service.

The PTE had proposed to operate to the Barras (CM, October 22) in the mornings, returning in the evening on Saturdays and Sundays, one journey in each direction with unlimited duplication. The intention was to start the service at Linwood and then operate via Johnstone, Paisley and East Fulton.

The objectors maintained that the proposed service would abstract traffic from their existing services, most of which received revenue support from Strathclyde Regional Council. Revenue lost as a result could well mean they would have to be cut back if the council was unable to make good the losses by increasing revenue support.

Refusing the application, the Commissioners said that they would notify all the parties of their reason in writing.
