Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A MAJOR hiccup in the latest round of pay negotiations may follow an agreement recently signed in the Liverpool area.

Merseyside hauliers have accepted a demand for a £6.00 overnight subsistence payment. This is against the national trend of £5.50.

Now union negotiators have claimed that in the pay deals still to be signed drivers will want the higher rate of subsistence.

Mr Mick Durant, United Road Transport Union divisional officer for the North West, said that the Liverpool agreement, details of which he had confirmed with ACAS, had thrown a spanner in the works.

"Our difficulty is that in the North West area we were on the verge of concluding an agreement with a £5.50 overnight payment.

"But many of our members work on the edge of the Liverpool area and quite naturally they want the higher rate as well."

Mr Durant said that the union negotiators would be seeking to re-open talks.
