THE result of yesterday's meeting of the European Transport Ministers could well lead Britain to the indignity of an appearance before the European Court in Luxembourg.
Continued obduracy by both management and unions on the introduction of tachographs is now undoubtedly taxing the patience of even our friends Brussels.
If we are called to face the court, our accusers w be in a position to make us look small.
They will be able to produce evidence which sho that it was the trade unions in other member states who demanded the use of tachographs.
They will further be able to demonstrate that the unions were correct in doing so since their member have reaped financial benefits ever since.
In addition, they will be able to produce evidenc( in abundance to show how operators have enjoyed financial benefits.
These benefits have resulted from better route planning, increased vehicle life and better utilisation -in many cases over 90 per cent.
Our European partners are looking at us pityingly this matter. They have no appetite for punishing us, but their patience is running out.
