TlIE Institute of Transport has issued a summary of kts work for the year
ended September 30, 1943. During that time, Mr. C. J. Selway was elected honorary treasurer following the death of Sir Henry Maybury, and Mr. F. J. Speight joined the Council on the .resignation of Mr. H. W. Elliott.
The past year is regarded as one of steady growth, with a healthy development of the contact which the institute makes possible between ttose already rich in experience in transport and those who will have to shoulder such responsibilities later.
Lunch-hour meetings were the main feature of activities in London, ther2 being many notable speakers.
There was inaugurated a Local Section for Northern Ireland; whilst the Hull and District Centre was constituted as a Sub-section of the. Yorkshire Section the activities of the Hull Traffic Association being merged into the latter. The 'work of the Institute Continued to be assisted in many directions by helpful and friendly relations with the Ttansport press.
The experimental Discussion Group was most successful, and the Council emphasized. the the desirability of forming others wherever this was considered practicable.
First awards Were made under the Henry Spurrier Memorial Trust.
A conference representative of the road-transport industry was held to discuss the position of education for it.
Many British prisoners of .war are taking correspondence courses with the Institute, and a further scheme to assist men in the Forces is in course of preparation.
During the year over 2,009 applies. tions for election to membership or transfer were dealt with, and the mem-, bership at the end of the -year was 5,327. The financial position is satisfactory.
