Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An agreement has now been signed between Volvo, Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz, Mack Trucks Inc and the Garrett Corporation for the development of a range of gas turbine engines of 500 hp rating.

The development is to be co-ordinated by a subsidiary of Garrett, Industrial Turbine International Inc, based in Los Angeles, and it is hoped that production engines will be available during the late Seventies. The engines are to be designed specifically for truck use and with modifications will also be marketed for industrial and marine applications.

Garrett is already deeply involved in gas turbine production for industrial use and as auxiliary power units. In this country the company is best know of its AiResearch range of diesel engine turbochargers.

Volvo announced in April that it was mdertaking a turbine development programme in conjunction with another manufacturer.
