MEAGRE SUM FOR ROAD UPKEEP

COMPLA1N1NG of the meagre road allowance granted them from central funds for 1956-57, North Riding Highways Committee say that it will cover only the cost of resurfacing 10 miles of first-class roads, three miles of second class and four miles of third class.

"If this is to be the future level," say the committee, "it means that class 1 roads will be resurfaced only once every 32 years, class 2 roads once every 80 years, and class 3 roads once every 262 years."

The 1956-57 allowance is the same as that for 1955-56, despite increased costs.

"QUICK-CHANGE" COMETS

DESIGNED for quick conversion from buses to coaches, three Leyland Comets are to be delivered to Timaru City Council, New Zealand. During the week the vehicles will be used on normal city services, but at week-ends detachable headrests can be fitted to the seats so that the vehicles can be used for tours.

The council already use Leyland Tigers and Royal Tigers for all-the-week operation.
