PR OVIS ON AL plans to construct a permanent coach station in the centre of Montreux, Switzerland, have been agreed by the local authorities. Three regular longdistance coach services already use Montreux as a principal terminus on their routes, these being the French line, operated by the Societ6 Nationale des Chemins de Fers, the Swedish Linjebuss concern and the German Europabus company.

In addition, there are large numbers of tours which terminate or stop overnight at Montreux, including some operated by British concerns. The occasion of the Montreux rally, which is an annual event attracting large numbers of coaches from all parts of Europe, adds further to the amount of coach traffic passing through the city.

AUSTRIAN RAILWAYS BUY NEW LUXURY COACHES OPERATING approximately 30 longdistance coach services, the Austrian Railways have recently acquired new luxury vehicles of. two types. Both are oil-engined, and are manufactured by Saurer, Vienna, and by Graf and Stift.

Reclining seats, a cocktail bar, radio and heating installations are common to both types of vehicle. The Graf and Stilt coach is of chassisless construction, and the pre-combustionchamber engine employs glow-plugs for starting. An overdrive unit is provided in the pneumatically controlled gearbox.

A similar transmission unit is fitted to the Saurer coach, which has a supercharged engine, producing a total of 150 b.h.p. The engine has wet cylinder liners, light-alloy pistons and a crankshaft-driven off pump.
