SHELL CATALYTIC 'CRACKER COMPLETED

THE first modern catalytic cracking unit in Europe has recently been completed at the Shell Penns refinery near Rotterdam. It took nearly two years to build and is due to come into full operation shortly. Its capacity is about gm. tons a year. A catalytic cracker performs one of many processes to secure the largest possible yield of high-grade products from crude ail.

The Pernis refinery is now the largest in Europe. Repairs to war damage brought its capacity back to the pre-war level in 1946, and subsequent expansion raised the figure to 5m. tons a year. The new extensions form part of Shell's overall post-war refinery expansion programme which .includes two important projects in the United Kingdom,

Taking installations in France, Germany and Italy into account, Shell claims to be the biggest refiner in Europe, with a total annual capacity of some 20m. tons.
