To avoid shipping difficulties, two

prominent motor manufacturers are . chartering ships for the export of their products. By agreement with Australian Conference Lines, the Nuffield Organization has chartered a 5,000-ton vessel to take over 1,000 vehicles to Melbourne, Leyland Motors, Ltd., is sending numbers of buses forming part of the order for 620 for Havana, Cuba, on two ships owned by the Lyle Shipping Co., Ltd. The vessel chartered by Nuffield is the m.v. "Exmoor," of the Moor Line, associated with the Runciman Line, and is due to arrive in Australia with a consignment of cars and commercial vehicles and Nuffield Universal tractors. She is the first which the organization has hired to dispose of arrears of orders in the latter half of 1951. The " Exmoor " will return with a load of grain.

Sixty-three Leyland buses are being dispatched on the "Cape Verde" from Liverpool and 24 on the "Cape Grenville" from Avonmouth. Some of the vehicles are being exported completely knocked down. So far; over 350 of the 620 buses have been completed.

During July, over 55 per cent. of Leyland's output was exported to 19 countries. Nearly. 100 passenger and goods chassis went to Australia.

COUNCIL TAKES OVER

IT is understood that the Montreal Tramways Co., which was formerly --privately operated, has been acquired by the Montreal Municipality. The Montreal Tramways Co. operated 975 trams, 46 trolleybuses and 500 singledeck motorbuses. Many of the motorbuses are equipped with A.E.C. oil engines.

STAFF SHORTAGES CAUSE DIFFICULTIES

PRESENTING his annual report, I Mr. J. E. Frith, general manager of Derby Transport Department, referred to serious difficulties caused by the shortage of male platform staff. Female conductors now outnumbered male conductors by three to one, which had caused a serious shortage of drivers, who were usually promoted from the conducting staff. But for overtime working, service cuts would have been much more serious, he said.

A similar situation is reported st Bournemouth, where the corporation transport undertaking is said to be short of 70 conductors.
