Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Ro d Haulage Association is to ask thr Ministry of Transport to permit so e existing vehicles to operate at higher ross weights if they comply with the egulations proposed by the Ministry fir new vehicles only. This was agreed by the Association's highways and vehicl s committee on Tuesday; it also decid d to ask for higher braking standards or new vehicles than the Ministry is specifying under these latest C. and U. iroposals. The R.H.A. wants the sugges ed 50 per cent efficiency for footbrakes raised to 60 per cent, and the handbrake figure from 25 to 35 per cent.

The committee disagreed in general with the axle spacings which will govern permitted weights, and especially wants the spacing reduced on fourand fiveaxled artics. It felt, too, that the 26-ft. axle spacing suggested for large rigids grossing 28 tons would create particularly difficult turning-circle problems; the committee is to make a technical investigation of this.

Complaints from members about shortages of commercial vehicle spares were discussed and the committee is to get more evidence about this -before taking further action.
