Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

piDISC type of transmission brake is, by special permission, being tried out on a bus operated by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd. An important maker of light passenger vehicles is also endeavouring to have the law amended to permit suitable transmission brakes to be embodied in their design. The disc brake, with its large cooling area and the small effect of expansion on it compared with brakes in which drums are used, is believed by many designers and operators fully to meet the technical requirements of a brake in this position.

COUNCIL TO RUN OWN TRANSPORT ?

A RECOMMENDATION that a rl haulage undertaking attached to the city architect's department be established has been made by Newcastle-onTyne Housing Management Committee. Hitherto, the city architect has hired vehicles to carry materials and equipment to various depots, but it has been decided that it would be more economical for the council to run their own transport. At present, two 3-ton lorries are hired at 9s. 6d.-10s. per hour and the annual cost is £2,106. This, it is stated, is £327 more than the estimated cost of running tipping vehicles. It is proposed to buy two Bedford 3-tonners from Adams and Gibbon, Ltd,

I HAVE a tremendously long list of people in the West Midlands wanting to enter or re-enter the industry. A vast number of them are operators wanting to expand their businesses, and there is a large number of ex-operators whose vehicles were acquired and who want to get their own vehicles again." Mr. G. F. Goodwin, secretary of the. West Midland Area of the Road Haulage Association, made this statement last week. Fresh applications to buy the Road Haulage Executive's assets were coming in day by day, he continued. Many of them were from operators who required only a few vehicles—" little men" whose average requests were from eight to 10 lorries. A number wanted only one or two vehicles.
