COURT OFFICIALS' FAILURE: DRIVER WINS APPEAL

DRISON sentences imposed upon James Douglas Crofts, 7-31 Allesley Street, Aston, Birmingham, were quashed by the Coventry Recorder, last week, and fines substituted, because of the failure of Birmingham court officials to follow the necessary procedure after Crofts had been disqualified from driving for three years by the Birmingham magistrates. The Recorder was told that the officials had not given instructions for Crofts' licence to be surrendered, neither had they informed the local motor taxation department of the disqualification. Crofts went to take a job as a lorry driver and was told by the department that he could renew his licence. Sentences of imprisonment for driving while disqualified and without insurance were subsequently imposed upon him by Coventry magistrates, and it was against these that Crofts successfully appealed.
