COUNCIL CONTRACTS INVESTIGATED.

Investigations into the rates paid under council contracts have recently been carried out by the Amalgamated Horse and Motor Owners Association and C.M.U.A. South-East Lanes Area. As an immediate result, two local councils have been approached, and they have been informed that tenders which they had accepted for haulage would not permit the carrying out of their own Standing Orders with regard to the payment of fair wages.

So far, no replies have been received. The matter is being followed up in other directions.

Road Transport Aids Employment.

A meeting of the Western Area of A.R.O., held at Bristol a few days ago, considered the merger between the Association and the C.M.U.A., Capt. J. W. Jones, chairman of the area, presiding. Major Eric Long, national political organizer to the A.R.O., said it was an opportunity of teaching the trader and consumer how much the industry meant to their livelihood. The road-transport industry is a national asset from the point of view of employment.

Mr. T. D. Corpe, legal adviser to New A.R.O. West-country Chairman.

At the annual general meeting of A.R.O. Devon and Cornwall Area last week, Mr. K. G. Foster (Landrake) was appointed chairman, in succession to Mr. C. Hodgson (St. Austell), a pioneer worker in the cause of unity.

Mr. J. Crews (Exeter) and Lt.-Comm. A. Fallon were elected delegates to the National Council. The finance committee was re-elected, with the addition of Mr. C. Hodgson.
