Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An appeal • by Howard Robinson, Ltd., Brighton, against a conviction in respect of drivers' hours, made on February 11 by the Brighton Magistrates, came before the Recorder, Mr. J. D. Cassels, N.C., at Brighton Quarter Sessions, last week. The case was reported in The Commercial Motor dated February 21 last. All the summonses related to one driver.

The driver, in evidence, said that he had not worked continuously for periods exceeding 51 hours or for over 11 hours in any day. The times given in the records were not necessarily accurate, as he had neither a watch nor a clock. The secretary of the concern stated that, in July, an employee whose duty it had been to check drivers' records had left the company. Since then there had not, for various reasons, been the necessary supervision.

No one with authority had, however, permitted drivers to work excessive hours. Four drivers had already been discharged for offences of this nature.

The appeal was dismissed, Huge Soviet Production Plans.

An Invaluable Aid to Repair Work.

To the many amateur mechanics, and there are not a few amongst commercial-vehicle operators, who carry out certain of their own repairs to their vehicles, "The Motor Repair Manual" will make a strong appeal. The seventh edition, which has recently been published, has been thoroughly revised, and much information of a valuable nature has been added. From the choice and use of tools, the amateur is made familiar with numerous examples of repair work, such as reconditioning an engine, overhauling and repairing the clutch, refacing of brakes, etc. It is a useful book and 100 per cent. practical.
