Westmorland M5 truckstop plan given go-ahead
CUMBRIAN TRUCKSTOP operator Westmorland has been given the go-ahead to open a 36-space HGV park and motorway service area on the M5.
The firm had to fight for its "controversial" plan to build the £35m service area for motorists on 70 acres of land in Gloucestershire after protest groups said it would destroy the rural landscape.
The operator says that the project will redefine industry standards when the north and southbound services open in 2013.
Westmorland already runs Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, as well as nearby truckstop `J38', which won a best truckstop award in 2009.
Sarah Dunning, Westmorland chief executive, says that the Gloucestershire Gateway Services will include lorry parking facilities on each side of the motorway, and that there will also be additional space for abnormal loads.
