THE 12-feet wide' campaign group will meet with the main political parties within weeks to hear their transport manifestos for the coming general election.
Representatives from the Road Haulage Association, the AA Motoring Trust, the British Chambers of Commerce, the Confederation of British Industry, the Freight Transport Association and the RAC Foundation who have joined together to call for investment in the motorway network, aim to highlight the problems of congestion faced by operators.
The group says widening the most congested parts of the Ml, M4, M25, M6 and M62 by an extra lane in each direction will increase their safe capacity by one third and make journeys easier for all.
RHA chief executive Roger King says: "Instead of trying to get them to listen to us we want to listen to them.We hope to meet with Alistair Darling, Tim Yeo and the transport representatives from the other parties to find out what the political future holds for road transport. We also want them to recognise operators' needs for extra capacity in the road system."
