Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

POLICE FORCES around the country are to be encouraged to take a more pro-active approach towards truck crime with the launch of a £40,000 training video next month (October).

It is designed to de-mystify haulage regulations and give officers more confidence in tackling truck crime. This follows a report highlighting differences in the support from forces around the country for the national anti-truck crime unit TruckPol (CM 26 August).

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Godwin of West Midlands Police says police often steer clear of trucks unless they are involved in a clearly identifiable offence:-If you are not an HGV driver, you have no innate interest in HGVs and all the documents and legislation can be a bit daunting. We are saying, don't be afraid to stop them and ask drivers who they are and where they are going."

He says the video will highlight situations that should be regarded as suspicious; it will also provide contacts for specialist help.

Godwin was formerly head of Operation Coppergold which tackled truck crime in the West Midlands until it was wound up last year.

Although there is an existing video to brief police about truck crime, Godwin says it is almost 10 years old and is geared to the needs of the Metropolitan Police.

The new video, which is largely funded by the Home Office, is due to be launched at the Association of Chief Police Officers vehicle crime conference on 6 October.
