NEW RECRUIT

I read with interest about the shortage of recruits to the transport industry (CM2-8 September). Well here is someone who wants to join the industry but requires some guidance. I am in my midthirties and work in the computer department of a large financial organisation in East Anglia. Since I was a small boy I have had an interest in the transport business and now I feel it is time to do something about this interest and have a career change.

My dilemma is simple: how can I move from a well-paid job to become a driver orjunior transport manager when I, like most, have children and a mortgage to consider? I have looked into the cost of training which would be, I estimate,

about £1,000 before the 23% vocational training tax refund. This I am happy to fund myself.

My philosophy is simply that if you are doing what you want to in life you wig give 100% dedication and commitment. Michael Jessup, Norfolk.

• Can anyone offer any help?—Ed.

GOOD LORD

Michael Daly of DTS Logistics raised an important point about the lack of MPs with transport experience in his recent letter (CM2-8 September).

Fortunately in the House of Lords we have many peers with hands-on experience of transport and logistics.

I ran a small commercial vehicle recovery and repair business. Later on, after taking my seat in the House, I ran a fleet of 300 vehicles for the UN in Africa. I also have CPC, C+E licence and I am a qualified HGV driving instructor.

We now have an unusual situation with the Minister of Transport, Lord MacDonald, and the Roads Minister, Lord Whiny, both in the House of Lords. I am the Opposition Spokesman for Transport in the Lords and I can assure you that I will be giving them a run for their money when we return in October!! will also be vigorously pursuing my impounding bill.

While loan easily understand issues raised with me by industry it is disappointing that only the Freight Transport, Road Haulage and Road Rescue Recovery Associations do so. Individual firms can contact me, particularly with problems of maladministration by Government or unfair overseas competition.

My e-mail address is attlee@parliament.uk or letters can be sent to the House.

Michael Daly need not worry too much about the Lords MacDonald and Whitty.

The Government's House of Lords Bill aims to remove the out of touch" hereditary peers, including all those like me with hands-on experience of transport.

The Earl of Attlee, House of fords, London.
