a heavily laden vehicle. George to get a run at it but there's a low-loader ctly ahead crawling along at about 4 mph. Irge goes down quickly through the gears :atch the revs and the Sixteen:Four resds with a roar that sends the dust flying. T the top the road twists and turns into distance, past farmhouses and steep, ided hillsides. Negotiating a blind leftder the Jungle Cafe comes into view, 7y stuff parked out front on the gravel. Approaching Shap at 53 mph George sorts out his gears on the upgrade and the Sixteen:Four, holding 15 mph, climbs steadily past the 1,100 feet elevation marker. Speed drops for a stretch and picks up to overtake a slow-moving artic near the summit. About Shap, George says: 'I could have done it faster but for people under my feet. I didn't need to go into second, just low third and she pulled away like mad. When I got into this machine I expected to do a bit of flogging because it's smaller than the one I usually

drive, but its performance up there was certainly surprising. To me., turning out an engine like this is quite an achievement for Perkins. Don't forget you're hauling 22 tons behind that engine.'

On the downgrade, just past the 1,200 ft marker, George applies the 'dead man' on a particularly nasty curve. Mentions the danger of inadvertently catching the 'dead man' control with his knee, due to the low positioning of the auxiliary braking lever on the steering column.

Seddon Design Team: This is caused by two factors, the first being that to operate the auxiliary braking you must push the lever forward. We've investigated the possibility of opposite hand control and find this isn't practicable. Secondly, the trafficator, horn-push, dip-switch control arm is mounted nearby, also on the column. However, we agree with George Hamlett that the auxiliary braking lever is awkwardly placed and so it's been re-positioned higher up the column, clear of any contact with the driver.

9.20 am: the Sixteen:Four climbs out of Penrith. Distant peaks shrouded in bluegrey mist. Making good time so far—the needle is never far away from 40 mph. Short stop at the Astra Cafe for tea and toast and then on through Carlisle, joining the A74 near Kingtown.
