ts for Overseas Road Making

Six Wheelers, Ltd., North Finchley, London. N.12.

The order comprises eight tractive units and five frameless-tanker and three platform semi-trailers. The first-named are Thornycroft Amazon six-wheelers, the second, Carrimore 2,000-gallon tankers, having two wheels, and the third, 15-ton four-wheel-bogie-type machines of the latter make.

For carrying bitumen, the tanks, which are Steel Barrel products, are equipped for steam heating and lagged with Alio!, the outer covering being aluminium sheet. Mounted behind the cab, on each of the Thorpycrofts to be employed with the tankers, is a Reavell blade-type air compressor. This is for B26 discharging the contents of the tanks, and for blowing clear the pipe lines, etc.

On the side of each tank, over the near-side trailing wheel, is carried a discharge manifold for simultaneously filling six barrels with bitumen. The manifold is provided with six taps and is connected to the tank dis charge orifice by a length of flexible piping. When in use, the manifold is dismounted from the position shown in our picture and supported by a tripod.

For the steam heating, there is a small connection at the rear, for coupling up to an independent source feeding a circulating pipe within the tanu. This terminates in a steam jacket around the main discharge valve, from which there is an escape to atmosphere.

Reverting to the compressor, this is chain-driven from the back of the gea.box, incorporates an elaborate lubricating apparatus, and is provided with a large air cleaner. Obviously, this last is of much importance in view of the conditions under which the vehicles will be operated.

From the compressor, on the off side, there is a straight 4-in, outlet, to wnich a length of hose can be coupled for the blowing-out operations referred to earlier, also a 2-in brancli, directed upwards and rearwards for connection with the hose to the top of the tank. At the back of the tank air-inlet fitting there is a pressure release valve.

. Whilst country vehicles, they are well equipped for thenegotiation of badly surfaCed roads and, presumably, for this reason, the six-wheeler with double drive has been chosen as tractive unit. In this connection, all its wheels are shod with 10.5-20 tyres, those on the trailing unit being 13.5-20, singles in all cases.

No fewer than three petrol tanks are carried on each Thornycroft, the capacity per vehicle totalling 30gallons. Braking is by Dewandre vacuum servo to all wheels and by Carrimore. multistroke lever to the trailing wheels. In the former system, there is one large cylinder for the four driving wheels, one cylinder for each front wheel and two for the trailer wheels. The last-named are coupled respectively to two upward

these outfits are not cross pointing arms on a tWo-piece cross-shaft positioned in front of the tear axle, which is also provided with central arms connected, via a compensator, with the cable from the hand lever.

Turning now to the platform 15-tonners, these will be employed for general purposes, carrying barrels, tools and equipment, road material. etc. They have twin-axle bogies, and similar tyre equipment to the tankers.

There is a Thompson 40-cwt. winch mounted at the front of each, with 22 ft. of platform behind it. Whilst the turntable gear is identical with that of the tankers, so that all the semitrailers ana tractive units are interchangeable, the construction in other respects is, of course, quite different.

Having 6-in. by 3-in, rolled channel as its basis, the frame is strengthened by tapering steel side plates welded on to the longitudinals. These gain depth from a minimum of 6 ins, at a point about 2 ft. behind the turntable to about 4 ft. above the large crossbeam which serves to support the spring brackets.

Substantial steel castings, the lastnamed are pivoted to the centres of Wood head inverted semi-elliptic springs, carrying at their ends the two axles. Each spring is composed of four plates in. thick and 6 ins. wide.

In this case the two Dewandre cylinders are mounted well forward, inside the frame, and from them cables run rearwards to long arms, on the upper' side of a cross-shaft and situated near its ends; the shaft is some distance beloW the floor, whilst the cylinders are close to it. Short upward-pointing levers convey the pull, via short rods. to adjustable attachments in the bifurcated ends of arms on the lower side of a second cross-shaft, which is mounted higher than and to the rear of the first. It has a long downward. pointingcentral lever to which the hand-brake cable is coupled, and the short arms incorporate lost-motion devices.

From the rear ends of the short rods encased cables run to compensators— one each side—whence steel ribbons convey the motion to the actual brakes. The drums are 18 ins, in diameter and the shoes are Ferodo faced.

There is no need for us to outline the make-up of the Amazon, as this is a well-k,nown model introduced 'Some years ago. In general, it follows the original -design •
