Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

said that the goods-vehicle and hackneyvehicle totals in the return of new motor vehicles registered in July made any tangible progress compared with recent months, they did, contrasted with other types of vehicle, put up a moderately good showing when set against the figures for July, 1937. Actually, the total registrations of all new vehicles was 34,594, „compared with 45,047 a year earlier, The goodsvehicle proportion being 5,622 (against 6,783) and the hackney-vehicle figure 894 (against 802). An interesting sidelight is that car registrations fell, by over 7,000.

Analysing the returns for petrol goods vehicles, we find that the 2-2/tonner put up by far the best showing, the nearest class to the 1,711 registrations of this type being 954 for vehicles from 12-cwt.-Mon unladen weight. Actually, the figure for the 2-2/tonner is well down on last year's comparable total (2,231), whilst the 12-cwt.l-ton division advanced from 859.

So far as the other petrol goods divisions are concerned, the following registrations were recorded, last year's corresponding totals being given in parentheses:—Not exceeding 12 cwt., 857 (1,120); 1-ton-1/-tons, 532 (672); 1/-2-tons, 832 (1,089); 2/-3-tons, 222 (302); 3-4-tons, 116 (123); 4-5-tons, 31 (45). There were only 12 vehicles registered in the classes covered by the outside limits of 5 tons and 10 tons.

The goods oiler came into the picture with a better return and, with 145 registrations, was 22 up on 'the total for July, 1937. The highspot in this section was the 4-5-tonner, with 44 registrations, a category which also touched the peak, with 30 licensed vehicles a year earlier.

The electric vehicle was prominent once again, this year's 102 registrations having to be set against 83 for July of last year. In this division, too, the peak was reached in the same class12-cwt.-1-ton—for July of both years. i.e., in 1938 it was 40 and in 1937, 32.

Multi-wheelers Gain.

In the four grades covering multiwheeled vehicles there were 190 registrations, contrasted with 151 in the previous year, the lead being held by the rigid six-wheeler with 62, followed by the five-wheeler (mechanical-horse type) with 60, then the aiticulated sixwheeler with 41 and, finally, the eightwheeler with 27.

Included in the goods-vehicle total were 21 machines licensed for drawing trailers, compared with 22 a year earlier.

The number of agricultural vans and lorries licensed fell from 105 to 90, the chief registrations taking place in the 12-cwt.-1-ton and 2-2i-ton divisions. Under the heading of agricultural engines (5s. class), 560 ploughing machines, etc., were registered, against 610 in July, 1937. Out of a total of 42 tractors, 10 were licensed for agricultural duties and 32 for generalhaulage purposes.

Coming to the hackney-vehicle returns, it is rather surprising to find that, once again, the oiler fell somewhat from grace, the total for July of this year, at 288, contrasting with 346 for July, 1937: In the petrol hackney division there was an upward trend. Last year's total of 431 advanced to 492 in July last, although it must not be forgotten that, out of this year's total 287 machines were taxicabs, contrasted with 198 in July, 1937.

The trolleybsis also came into prominence with 114 registrations—all the vehicles being double-deckers—compared with 25 in the same month. of 1937. Out of the total of hackneys 90 were six-wheelers.

The aggregate figures for the seven months ended July show that 42,129 goods vehicles and 6,159 hackney machines were licensed, last year's corresponding returns being 47,747 and 5,745.
