LORRY FOR HIGH-SPEED WORK.

A New American 2-tonner for Which Agents are Being Sought in this Country. _ The Latest Product of a Company Who Have Specialized on Commercial Vehicles for 21 Years.

THE ATTERBURY Motor Car Co., Buffalo, N.Y., are one of the pioneer lorry-manufacturing concerns in the United States, for it is now 21 years since they put their first model an the market. In fact, they claim to be the oldest company in America that has specialized in lorry manufacture. Considerable experience, therefore, is behind the newest Atterbury product, a lorry of 2-ton capacity capable of attaining a speed of 30 miles per hour.

The manufacturers are of the opinion that this medium-capacity speed vehicle will supply a distinct need in the 'United States, as it is capable of carrying a fair-sized load at the maximum limits of speed that the laws of the respective States allow. The opinion is expressed, also, that the Atterbury Highway Express for such it is christened, will make a distinct appeal on this side of the Atlantic, and dealers interested in securing representation for this vehicle are advised to get into corn-munication with the sales department of the company.

We have expressed the opinion before that the day cannot be far distant when regulations will permit of high-speed lorries operating over many of our highways, and chiefly on this account is the new Atterbury product of interest to our readers.

The weight of the chassis is 9,750 lb., and the allowance for the weight of the body is 1,250 lb. It is equipped with a four-cylinder Buda ETU high-speed lorry engine, with a 4-in, bore and a 54-in. stroke, suspended at three points in the chassis frame. The power unit has a detachable head and the lubrication is carried out under pressure. The carburetter fitted is a non-adjustable Zenith, whilst ignition is provided by a Bosch high-tension waterproof magneto. The vertical seamless-tube radiator, of polished aluminium, has a special shock absorbing form of suspension. _

The engine power is transmitted through a Brown-Lipe multiple-disc clutch, which operates without oil, to a selective-type gearbox of the same make. Timken bearings are fitted throughout the gearbox. Three speeds forward and one reverse are provided, the first forward speed being 4.8 to 1; the second, 2.25 to 1; and the third, direct drive; the reverse ratio is 6 to 1. Final gear ratios are 7,25 to 1, 16.3 to 1, and 39.8 to 1, the reverse being 43.5 to 1.* A tubular propeller shaft with three Spicer universals carries the drive to the rear axle. The centre of the shaft is carried by a self .aligning ball, bearing.

The front axle is of .drop-forged I beam steel, manufactured by the Timken -Co. At the rear of the axle is the steering tie-rod. The rear axle is of the Timken worm-driven type. The standard ratio for this axle is 7.25 to 1, but optional ratios of 6.5 to 1, 7.25 to 1, and 8,75 to 1. can be obtained. Both axles have Timken bearings throughout. Special heat-treated spring-perch silica manganese bronze-bushed springs are fitted, those at the front being 414. longand 21 ins, wide, and those at the rear 54 ins, long and 21 ins. wide.

The frame is of pressed steel and it is built low to the ground, as it is realized that a low centre of gravity must be aimed at if high loads are to be carried at speed. The frame is capable of supporting a 12-ft. body, Heavy artillery-type wheels are fitted. The front Wheels are 34 ins, in diameter and have 12 spokes. The rear wheels are of the same diameter, but their 12 • spokes are 2 ins, thick when solid tyres are fitted. Special 20-in, steel wheels are provided when pneumatic tyres are used. It might here be stated that the makers do not expect a speed of more than 25 m.p.h. to be maintained when solids are fitted. Balloon tyres can be supplied as an extra, The wheelbase of the chassis is 1,5ff ins., the track for the front wheels is 58 ins,, and for the rear wheels 60 ins.

The standard equipment of the new Atterbury 2-tormer includes a fully enclosed square-fashioned all-weather cab, with wide doors and sliding curtains. The windshield is built into the cab, and is of the double-piece type. Two electric headlights, an electric tail light, and an electric horn are provided, together with

• a Bosch generator' a Willard storage battery, a vacuum tank, a jack, and a full set of tools. A Bosch electric starter and a transmission tyre pump can he furnished at extra cost-.

The price of the Atterbury Highway ,Express, if fitted with halloon-type tyres and steel wheels is 2,550 dollars f.o.b. Buffalo. With heavy-duty cushion tyres and artillery wheels the price is • 2,450 dollars f.o.b. Buffalo. It should be noted that these prices cover the cost of the full equipment, This is in striking contrast to the general practice of (mot-, ing a price for bare chassis.
