But Kinnock says that before the end of the year the European Commission will propose legislation to co-ordinate weekend bans.
The bans enforced by seven EU member states start and end at different times, with the exception of France and Luxembourg, which apply the same schedule. These two countries, as well as Spain and Portugal. spoke out in favour of harmonising week-end restrictions.
UK hauliers have suffered considerable disruption since earlier this year when France withdrew UK operators' traditional dispensation when returning to the UK.
• Dutch transport Minister Annemarie Jorritsma says driving restrictions should start at 06:110hrs on Sundays rather than 22:00 or 24:00hrs on Saturdays to "reduce chances of hauliers getting stuck at borders".
