• As a result uf a product monitoring programme MercedesBenz is confident that its Sprinter range will complete a 311,000-mile (500,000km) service life with only minimal maintenance costs. With a small parts investment it be capa

ble of "several hundred thousand kilometres", says M-B.

This week Georg Weiberg, head of M-B van development, showed an operator's vehicle with more than 400,000km at the

Sprinler plant in Dusseldorf which had been bought back and dismantled.

During the Sprinter's life the operator had spent around 5,000DM (£1,785) on repairs— less than 0.5p/km.

According to Weiberg the only major problems—a cracked cylinder head jacket and a worn clutch plate—could be rectified for 6,000Dm (x2,100), considerably extending its life.

The transmission was in good condition and capable of running a further 250,000km, he added, while the steering was also fault free and good for another 100,000km.

The clutch was fully operational although the inner bow springs were found to be broken and the clutch disc was worn.
