THE Metropolitan deputy Licensing

Authority, Mr. C. J. Macdonald, on Tuesday granted "with some hesitation" an application by a Belvedere, Kent, greengrocer to operate one vehicle on B licence conditioned to carry manufactured timber products for William Mallinson and Sons (Manufacturing) Ltd., of Crayford.

The applicant, Mr. B. M. Haziewood, told the deputy Authority that the vehicle, which he bought about four months ago, was at present lying idle, and the intention was to use it between July and February each year for Mallinson and Sons whom he had approached for work.

Cross-examined by Miss E. Havers, for G. A. Sinfield and Son (London) Ltd., who, with British Railways, were objecting, Mr. Hazlewood said that during the period when the vehicle was lying idle he hoped to "find other things to do ".

After supporting evidence was given on behalf of Mallinson and Sons, Miss Havers submitted that her clients would not be concerned with a grant if the application, which sought to carry general goods in Great Britain, were restricted to a 120-mile radius. Mr. C. Frere-Smith, for the applicant, acceded to the suggested modification.

Giving his decision, Mr. Macdonald

said that if the application were grante the applicant would be bound to loc round for more work to do and in tl end the customer would again be in tran port difficulties.

"I want to protect the applicant much as I want to protect the customer he added. "if the applicant ran in disaster, it would be .partly my fault Mr. Macdonald continued.

After saying that he would take a ris Mr. Macdonald granted the applicatic as modified, with a warning that ti applicant would get no preference ov other hauliers for other work if I applied to extend the conditions.
