Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Sevel triplets already have a market niche to themselves; now the new mini Sevels seem about to step out of their class.

Colin Barnett reports.

The 2,300kg-ish market sector that plugged the gap between high-cube vans and smaller panel vans such as the Volkswagen Transporter has been increasingly deserted in recent times. LDV's ancient Pilot was chopped at the end of 2005 while the Nissan Serena and cloned LDV Cub have been gone for more than two years.

Apart from some mission creep from the bigger Ford Transit Connects, the 1995launched Citroen Dispatch, Fiat Scudo and Peugeot Expert have dominated the sector.

Comprehensive redesign Now the next generation of the compact panel vans that are commonly known as mini Sevel has been revealed. Although it is a completely new design, the previous names are being carried over.

All three jointly designed and built products of the PSA/Fiat Sevel partnership are built at the Sevel-Nord plant at Valencienne in northern France.

The previous single-body range is now expanded to four by the inclusion of two heights and two lengths. Resulting load volumes are 5-7m'.

Strangely, the GVW ratings of the vans are a closely guarded secret until we get our first chance of a drive in a couple of weeks, but payloads of 1,000-1.200kg are claimed, moving the mini Sevel up and into Vito andTransporter territory.

Builders of custom sandwich vans and the like need not fear, as a platform cab version will be available:The trademark three-seater cab also continues.

Passenger versions As well as the vans, passenger versions seating up to nine are also available. Three PSAoriginated turbo-diesel engines are fitted across the range: a 1.6-litre lump rated at 90hp and a 2.0-litre at 120 and 136hp.The latter features a diesel particulate filter for ultra-low emissions. There is also a 140hp 2.0-litre petrol option for buyers with an aversion to diesel.

Exact UK specs and prices aren't being revealed just yet. and will probably vary across the three brands. However, we expect two Europallet-sized side-loading doors to feature. while air suspension will be an innovative option in this sector. Side air bags. cruise control, a speed limiter and ESP (electronic stability program) are all included in the spec possibilities. •
