• Rail-freight operators will soon face the same swingeim fines as hauliers if they are caught with illegal immigranti on board their wagons.

From next year operators such as English, Welsh it Scottish Railways (EWS) will be fined £2,000 for every stowaway found on their freight trains. EWS has condemned thi move. If this law had been in from the start of this year wi would we looking at fines of over £2m—that's the sort al damage it could do to our industry," says a spokesman.

The Freight Transport Association warns that the fine5. will "introduce significant delays and costs into railfreight services." But the Home Office insists that they wii be in place by the end of January 2001.
