Italian doctors who examined the body of Penrith-basod driver David Boyce concluded that it was the shock of emerging from his heated cab into the freezing temperature that killed him.

Pathologist Ervine Long said: "He probably got up to spend a penny and the sudden impact of the cold night caused a sudden collapse and thermal shock."

Boyce was making a routine trip through the Santla region of Italy in 1998 when the incident happened, East Cumbrian coroner Ian Morton recorded a verdict of accidental death.
