The battery feature in this edition highlights a belief that dialogue between some OEMs and battery producers is sadly lacking. It is astonishing that today some new trucks still leave the bodybuilder equipped with the factory-fit battery—a battery which may well prove hopelessly inadequate for the application. The reluctance to embrace electronic technology lives on in many quarters. Diagnostics appears to be a particular problem, be this clue to a lack of equipment or poor knowledge. Good communication is at the core of both of these problems. Dealing with electronics requires re-education. Workshop practice must be injected with new levels of cleanliness, subtlety and methodical precision if modern ABS and engine management systems are to be successfully cared for.
