• The Department of Transport has issued instructions to all testing stations to check the service line coupling on all trailers at the annual test.

If the operating plug is not present, or the valve opening created by the operating plug is not within prescribed tolerances then the operator of the trailer will be advised of the fault.

This check is being applied now and failure of the coupling will result in test failure from 1 January 1996.

Forester & Hales, in conjunction with the DOT, has developed the indicator gauge used to check the service line coupling and has supplied it to all UK testing stations.

kits are now available to fleet operators and maintenance facilities (For details write No 81 on reader reply card) enabling regular safely checks to be made. They would be particularly useful for operators that frequently tow 'unknown' trailers.
