A s someone who is deeply

involved in our industry, on the engineering side, I am becoming increasingly alarmed at the state of near anarchy which is rapidly developing on the roads of Britain.

Many operators cannot possibly do their journeys legally so are resorting to tacho fiddling technology— for example pins, wire and crocodile clips—and it has become something of a joke. And speed limiters, well that is another subject altogether!

However, on a journey north recently with my trusty old CB radio on to keep me company I heard a conversation between two "professional" truck drivers which proved that there is not really a funny side to all this law breaking.

The conversation went something like this:

Driver 1: "What do you get when you get to Felixstowe?" Driver 2: "Have my break and then come home."

Driver 1: Not me I just came straight back. If you take XXX it keeps you awake!"

Driver 2: "I've heard that doesn't work" (Obviously he has not tried it.) Driver 1: "If you take it with XXX (here he mentioned a cold remedy) it gives you a high and you can't sleep!"

Unfortunately, they were going in the other direction to me so I was unable to identify the brainless wonder who thought it smart to drive all the way from Scotland to Felixstowe and then turn round and do it all again without any rest If I had, I would have had no hesitation in turning him in!

This little incident illustrates how important it is to increase the chances of such idiots being caught before they kill some innocent family who just happen to be in the wrong place when the brain-dead driver makes a mistake and drives over the top of them.

This is only likely when the Government puts more resources into enforcement and makes it inevitable that people like this will get caught sooner rather than later.
