Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN ingenious chain adjuster which provides for the automatic take-up of slack as it develops has been introduced by Renold Chains, Ltd., Manchester. That part of the adjuster in contact with the chain is a rubber head bonded to a plunger which moves in the body of the adjuster.

Beneath the plunger is a light spring and this, assisted by oil pressure, maintains the rubber head in contact with the chain. The plunger, which is hollow, -houses what is termed a restraint cylinder in which a helical slot is formed.

Engaging in this slot is a peg secured to the adjuster body. One edge of the slot is smooth and the other edge has a series of serrations formed in it. Whilst no resistance is offered to the movement of the plunger towards.the chain, its movement away from it is governed by the pitch of the serrations which are progressively engaged as slackness develops.

Arrangements are made in the device for the efficient lubrication of the chain.
