been prosecuted for breaching weight restrictions in Shrewsbury, after Shropshire Council said it wouldn't normally take companies to court for the offence (CM 2 May).

It takes the total number of LGV drivers appearing in court in the county to 10 and has led to fines of between £80 and £175, plus costs of up to £130. All pleaded guilty to driving their vehicles down London Road in Shrewsbury, which has a 75-tonne weight limit.

"Public protection officers carry out targeted monitoring of our weight-restricted roads and bridges on an ongoing basis," said Frances Darling, public protection service manager at the council. "The LGVs in these cases were driven down weight-restricted roads on a number of occasions. Follow-up enquiries determined that the drivers had no reason for travelling along the roads in question and had not taken any steps to prevent the breaches. We were left with no option but to institute legal proceedings in each case."

Nick Payne, regional director at the Road Haulage Association, said: "Local councils appear to be cracking down more heavily than they have done in the past, and drivers seem to be the target."
