With West's concern for residual values it's no surprise that his Scania has had "a main dealer ser vice record from day one". A service contract with Southway Scania at Avonmouth cost him 11,900 for the first two years, including all servicing and inspections. Now he is on a £100-a-month servicing/sixweekly inspection scheme which doesn't include breakdown.

A 24-hour servicing scheme is available and parts availability is good but he hasn't had to make much use of it so far: "This is virtually maintenance free," he says. "Up till now I haven't had to pay for a light bulb."

However, the Scania hasn't been entirely trouble-free: a front spring broke recently, but a replacement from a local parts dealer cost just £40 fitted.

The Scania gets through a set of front tyres every year—that's only around 30,000kmwith drive axle tyres lasting twice as long. West reckons the weight of the cab has something to do with it.
