• The total amount of freight carried internally by British registered trucks fell slightly last year, according to the Department of Transport, Transport of Goods by Road in Great Britain 2001 shows that the total freight moved by GBregistered HGVs within the UK fell by 0.7% from 150bn tonnekilometres in 2000 to 149bn tonne-kilometres in 2001.
Other key findings include: • The tonnes lifted fell by 0.8% from 1,593 million tonnes in 2000 to 1,581 million tonnes in 2001; • The average length of haul was 94km, unchanged from 2000; the Increase in average length of haul for artics—from 134km to 136km—was offset by a decline for rigid vehicles from 49krn to 47km , • The total of vehicle kilometres travelled fell by 3.4% from 22,990 million kilometres in 2000 to 22,207 in 2001.
The survey is based on a weekly sample of HGVs. In 2001 questionnaires were sent to the registered keepers of about 19,000 vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (about 360 vehicles a week0.
• On the same day the DoT published figures showing that overall traffic rose by 3% between the first quarter of 2001 and the same quarter of 2002. Car traffic rose by Just over 3%; freight traffic rose by 2%. The small rise partly reflects the Impact of foot and mouth disease on traffic In the first quarter of 2001.
