It's 'the Balls Pond lorry spotters club, folks I Yes, for the benefit of those who know nothing of North London, Balls Pond Road, beloved of the Goon Show and other radio comedy programmes, really does exist and, to prove it, is becoming an official lorry route that is if the GLC has its way and the Balls Pond Road Action Committee doesn't, For the committee is campaigning against the proposal.

One night last week action committee members counted 100 lorries go past between midnight and 5am. "A lorry every three minutes through the night is enough to ruin sleep," said one campaigner. And they reckon that if the Balls Pond Road is put on a lorry route map then the Continentals will learn about this discreet route from Islington to Dalston.

Those making the nocturnal survey were given 10 questions to fill in on a form about each lorry spotted, and there were panicky scenes when several vehicles approached together, some of the drivers innocently giving cheery waves as spotters yelled : `Four axles, toxic tanker, long vehicle, national haulier, three axles, stripes ..."

Don't tell anyone, but the Balls Pond Road is on the way from our offices to our printers; we normally go by car, and now we are firmly resisting the temptation to make the trip by 324ton test vehicle.
