Mercedes' announcement (CM last week) that it 'is sponsoring research 5nto the impact of the heavy lorry on the British environment came as a surprise; the pilot study which they have already undertaken must have been conducted very discreetly.

Apparently 200 organisations were approached in the pilot study, including political and local government groups, fleet owners, drivers and environmental protection interests, not forgetting 184 housewives. Perhaps it was significant that one of the main areas of concern which the study threw up was the running, reliability and management of road transport, Now there couldn't be a more topical hint for the RHA members to ponder as they atudy the new John Wells package, could there ?

The full Mere-sponsored study sounds fearsomely professional: the announcement tells us that it Will include the use of "intensive questionnaire techniques, linked with subjective rating methods as used in applied psychology" : and that's just to appraise the good and bad points of cab design.
