Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THREE materials suitable for the 1 manufacture of plain bearings which will run without oil lubrication are introduced by the Glacier Metal Co., Ltd., of Alperton, Wembley, Middx. .D.u: comprises a bronze-coated steel strip impregnated with a mixture of fluoro-carbon plastics and lead. It is claimed to give three times the load/speed carrying capacity of the company's original D.P. material which it now super

D.Q. is a fluoro-carbon, strengthened with special fillers, and supplied in bars or tubes for the machining of irregularly shaped bearings.

D.M. is a process for applying an adherent layer of fluoro-carbon and molybdenum disulphide to the bearing surfaces of parts sent in for treatment.

Better Filtration THE Maxivee, produced by Vokes, Ltd., Henley Park, Guildford, Surrey, is a lubricating-oil filter element employing a new filter medium called VAF 66. The element is formed from impregnated felt with plastics-sealed end caps. It is sufficiently rigid in itself to need no supporting gauze. This allows a greater amount of active filtering material to be accommodated.

It is stated that tests have shown this filter to have a service life of 10.000 miles.

Welding Unit in A COMPOSITE power unit which is

designed for use with the Argonarc welding process is now being marketed by British Oxygen Gases, Ltd., Industrial Division, Spencer House, St. James's, S.W.I.

Known as the CPU 350, this unit is said to provide maximum productive efficiency when used in connection with the A.C. welding of aluminium and its alloys up to } in. thick, in a single pass, and the welding of stainless steel up to in. in thickness.

Welding speed, is governed by a remotecontrol foot switch, whilst cooling of the electrode by argon gas is effected automatically. The power unit is suitable for 360/500-v. 50-cycle single-phase operation, with a striking voltage of 50v. It is contained in a plastics case which has quickly removable panels.

Line Tester ENABLING a contact to be found live J---4 or otherwise, a line tester sold by the Pool Clock Co., 30 City Road, London, E.C.1, consists of a transparent plastics holder incorporating a coil which glows when passing a current. A cable enters the holder, and the end of the flex is provided with a crocodile clip for attachment to any convenient earth.

A metal probe is inserted in the other end of the holder to be touched against the contact, and for effecting a repair a screwdriver bit may be substituted for it. The tester costs 9s. 6d.

Small Fork Truck A HAND-OPERATED 'hydraulic forkI-1 lift attachment for their Miniveyor powered trolley is announced by Whades (Sussex), Ltd., Duke Street, Littlehampton. At an inclusive price of £147 for the complete truck, it is claimed to be the lowest-priced mobile fork-lift truck currently on sale.

It is stated that the attachment can be fitted to the Miniveyor by one man in a minute and removed in a matter of seconds. It will lift loads of 4 cwt. to a height of 4 ft.

The Miniveyor itself is powered by a Villiers 147 c.c. two-stroke engine mounted over the single front wheel.

When the tork-litt attacnment is not ni use, the trolley may be fitted with. either a truck body or a -1-cu.-yd. tipping body. In each case the payload capacity is 10 cwt.

Compression Testing TESTING the compression of petrol 1 engines at normal running speeds is made possible by using an instrument manufactured by the Dunedin Engineering Co., Ltd., 51 Beauchamp. Place, London, S.W.3.

Known as the Autotester, the equipment consists of 'a length of pressure tubing attached to a dial. The other end of the tube is inserted in place of the sparking plug on the cylinder to be tested. The engine is started and a reading is given on the dial.

Complete with adapters for different sparking-plug sizes and packed in a metal case, the Autotester costs £12 10s.

Headlamp Setting KNOWN as the Beamchecker, an inexpensive device for adjusting headlamp settings is now being marketed by the Notek Electrical Co., Bromley, Kent.

Claimed to be simple to operate, the instrument is placed close to the front of the lamp, and a rectangular metal flag, accurately positioned and vertically adjustable by means of a knurled wheel, is aligned on the off-side of the beam.

If the shadow from the lamp does not fall within the graph indication on the flag, the inaccuracy is shown and the necessary amount of correction given.

Approved by the Road Research Laboratory, the instrument costs £7 4s.

Temperature Gauge

ASILY fitted to any engine, an elec

trically operated temperature gauge is offered by the Key Leather Co., Ltd,, 5 Urswick Road, London, E.9. The gauge, which operates from a 12-v.-electrical system, is operated by a heatsensitive pellet which is screwed into any part of the cooling system, either using an existing tapping or, if this is not possible, an adapter can be supplied for fitting to the radiator hose.

Chrome Restorer NO hard rubbing is said to be required when applying Romac Chrome Restorer, which sells at 3s. lid, per 75-gm. tube. It can also be used to remove tar from paintwork.
