Owners and the Roads.

A " call to arms " has been sounded by the attack of the County Councils Association upon the axle-weight and other regulations now in force under the Heavy Motor Car Order of 1904. We give the whole text of the document on pages 222 and 223, whilst we deal editorially with the occasion for concerted resistance on page 211.

Albions for Furnishers.

Bow's Emporium, Ltd., a wellknown company of furnishers in Glasgow, owns a fleet of three 16 h.p. Albion vehicles. One of these vehicles is illustrated herewith. This machine is of the twoton-size, and it was bought at the end of the year 1906. This owner, in common with many others in the furnishing and warehousing trades, gives a good account of the work done by Albions.

From Another Napierite.

We illustrate, on page 228, a Napier van which belongs to Messrs. Kerslake and Son, bakers, of Lewisham High Road, S.E. This is used for the delivery of bread, flour arid pastry on ordinary rounds, and it averages fully 40 miles a day with loads which seldom reach more than five cwt. The work of twohorse vans is easily accomplished, and we understand that a second motorvan is soon to be put into use.

These owners consider that pneumatic tires are superior to solid tires, for their purposes.

On special occasions, in connection with catering contracts, loads of considerably greater weight are carried, inclusive of the load upon the roof. On more than one occasion, we are told, 13 cwt. has been successfully conveyed. Thevan works for long hours—sometimgs from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Costs for Rubber-tired Steamers Bean's Express, Ltd., under the signature of Mr. Percy Allen, one of its directors, has given the following testimonial and costs in respect of Foden's three-ton steamers on rubber tires, which type of vehicle is allowed by law to run at 12 miles an hour :— " We are pleased to say that they are still giving us every satisfaction, and further, we are glad to say that ihey are still running as well as when first new. We have had the first two for just over two years, and for your information we enclose a detailed summary of running costs, taken over a period of two years. You will observe that we have allowed 15 per cent, depreciation, which we consider is ample, this being exclusive of the actual cost of fires. We may say that we never find it necessary to have a second man with these wagons."

T)enrecia,tion. 15 per cent. on £440 (cost of wagon, less tires) ... ... ... ...
