Hauliers in East Anglia are to consider the creation of a regional TruckWatch

scheme to track down stolen truas and loads. Guy Sheppard repor_s.

LOCAL HAULIERS in Suffolk have agreed to discuss the idea of joining forces with Norfolk TruckWatch and Essex Police.

TruckWa tch has operated separately in Norfolk and Suffolk for years but its impact has been limited, despite backing from police and trade associations.

Tony Allen. chairman of Suffolk TruckWatch. says: "It seems reasonable to be looking at the idea of a regional TruckWatch, especially now the government is looking at the idea of making regional police forces."

The move follows a decision by South Yorkshire TruckWatch, which has more than 1(() member companies, to explore the idea of expanding into West and North Yorkshire as well as Humberside (CM 1 December 2005).

Allen, who is also chairman of the Road Haulage Association security committee, says the work of Suffolk TruckWatch had been overshadowed by the Supply Chain Security Group, which was set up in Felixstowe to combat the highest levels of container theft in the country.

"It fell by the wayside, so we've decided to reconvene TruckWatch and look at where it is and what it's doing," he explains.

Allen believes that a revamped regional scheme would encourage a greater focus on truck theft by the police, as well as greater awareness about the risk of theft among road hauliers.

Ted Gill, administrator of Norfolk Truck Watch, says the merger idea will be discussed with its 43 member companies at a meeting later this month.
