• A family haulage firm which has been trading since 1910 is to close. Preston-based Doodler & Sons will cease trading within the next 10 weeks, citing "the inability to pass on excessive fuel and taxation costs" to its customers.
The firm's director, John Coacher, is the third generation to run the bulk tipping firm. He says: in our heyday we used to run 28 trucks, but
now were down to eight." A Doodler associated company will continue to supply customers with tipper trailers, and will co-ordinate their transport through other firms.
Goodier stresses that the company will settle all its debts and will not be appointing a liquidator. He concludes: "The way this industry is going, it's time to get out. I'm planning a long and happy retirement."
