• Dawn and John Williams made the decision to increase the size of the tanks on their vehicles about 18 months ago, when fuel escalators and VED increases became "really silly". As a traction specialist, the company finds units with a 6x2 configuration most appropriate to its customers' needs. The problem with a 6x2 is that the additional axle restricts the space available for a replacement tank.

The company chose Wisbech-based Truck Logic as its supplier. It took a day to have the vehicle converted, and there were no problems with the warranty. The vehicles were bought on a three-year deal with maintenance, and the MAN dealer did all the fitting.

Taking the configuration into account, the replacement tanks have extended the capacity by more than 300 litres. The fuel tank capacities of the three regular units are 825-850 litres, producing significant savings on fuel when travelling abroad and also saving on operating costs when returning home.

The vehicles always come back from abroad with full tanks," says Dawn Williams. "Because we have other work during the weekend, we can run more economically for those two days before they are off across the Channel again."

Earlier this month the company ran a hire truck—an experience that shows the dear advantages of the extra capacity. "It has a 300-litre tank that didn't even get us to Wales and back, whereas our larger replacement tanks will take us to Scotland and back without refuelling," she reports.
