"You have to put a stack system up behind the cab and then move the batteries," says director Steven Bushell. "The problems arise because this can compromise the swing clearance."

In general, 6x2 configurations cause the most problems. "If a customer wants bigger tanks on a 6x2, we have to move the air tanks and the batteries," Bushell explains. "We try to get the capacity to anything from 800-L000 litres. On a Scania tag-axle we can get about 900 litres, as opposed to 500 litres with the standard tank."

SB also makes red-diesel tanks for temperature-controlled operators. "A lot of them tap into the white diesel tank to provide fuel for the fridge," says Bushell. "They can run them legally on red diesel and save a lot. We make a separate 90-litre tank. The savings can be significant when you realise that red diesel costs around 18p a litre. Some operators might think red diesel is not always available, but more and more garages are supplying it for just this reason."
