THE Institute of the Motor industry has opened a memorial fund to provide permanent recognition of the services of the Institute's late President Emeritus, Mr. Stanley S. Dawes.

COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT CHIEF FOR B.R.

AS a step in building up a strong commercial organization for British Railways, Mr. S. C. Robbins. the B.T.C.'s chief contracts officer, has joined the headquarters Commercial Department as chief development officer. He will be responsible for developing contacts with major industries and industrial groups, including research into improving the railways' service to these industries. Mr. Robbins will also act as deputy to the chief commercial officer.

I N an objection to an application by Mead Brothers (Kingsbury), Ltd., (reported in last week's issue of The Commercial Motor), reference was made to a submission on behalf of the B.T.C. that undertakings from customers that there would be no abstraction were unacceptable. We have been asked to point out that this was with regard to customers in general; whilst the undertakings given by the witnesses were acceptable, a grant in excess of requirements could nevertheles result in abstraction.

NEW MAXIMA FOR AUSTRIA

FROM October I this year, Austria is to reduce the maximum permissible length for tractor-trailer outfits to 164 metres (54 ft.), while increasing the maximum permissible axle weight. Units already in service will be granted a conversion period ending December 31, 1970.
