Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SOS SKIP HIRE and Haulage has been ined £7,000 after it admitted illegally dumped waste, which could have covered an area the size of a football pitch, on a closed landill site.

At Lincoln Magistrates’ Court, the company, which is authorised for eight trucks and one trailer, pleaded guilty to dumping the waste in May 2010.

Miriam Tordoff, prosecuting for the Environment Agency (EA), told the court the old Great Northern Terrance landill site in Lincoln had been shut since 1990. Next to the area was a waste transfer station operated by Saracens Skip Hire – a business operated by the same family as SOS.

In June 2010 the agency’s environment oficers discovered that a large area on the closed site had been covered with several hundred tonnes of waste soils.
